I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I recently started taking an interest in cooking.
It’s no secret I am not the best chef, but I’m also the messiest! I do the majority of my work from home, so I really enjoy eating out since it gets me out of the house,
Recently, I’ve found myself exploring the idea of stepping outside my usual routines and embracing creativity outside of my workday. With the help of many crew members – including Lauren our content editor and copywriter, Evan our videographer, and Bethany our graphic designer – I’ve finally found a way to keep up with content creation and distribution. This has left me with extra time and got me thinking, how can I corporate creativity into my life as an adult?
Below I’m sharing how I incorporate creativity into my adult life in my daily adult life along with ways you can tap into your own creativity:
GETTING IN THE KITCHEN | Cooking
We all have different strengths and weaknesses when it comes to being in the kitchen. So, why not tackle something totally out of your comfort zone? For me, pushing myself out of my comfort zone helped me gain a new skill. Since Matt and I moved into our fixer-upper, I’ve been trying to get behind our new GE Profile Stove three to four times a week to try out some recipes. From a Pad Thai fail to a shrimp and lemon pasta win – I’m having fun being creative!
Our kitchen makeover is complete and the reveal will in August! Until then, recap with our kitchen demolition video here.
PLAYING WITH FILM | Digital Photography and Film
Photography is already in my wheelhouse – but it may be a new activity for you!
In the era of selfies and snapping pictures of just about everything, photography is still an art. Whether you want to dive into digital photography or classic film photography, I urge you to put down the phone and pick up a camera. When people ask me about my photography I always say “practice makes perfect.”
Whether you’re shooting your family’s Christmas card or a day with your friends seaside, I always find memories on film rolls and memory cards allow me to witness a photographer’s creative personality. On your next adventure, grab a digital camera or a less-expensive polaroid camera and be thoughtful with your film.
EMBRACING BEAUTY | Styling & Skincare
Let’s say you don’t have the energy to cook after work or the leisure to practice photography on the weekends – try tapping into your creativity as an adult with styling and skincare!
Fact: we wake up and get dressed every day. But allowing ourselves an extra 20 minutes in the morning to style our individuality and soak in a skincare routine can start the day with creativity!
Mixing the usual sets up to create new outfit combinations is my favorite ways to embrace innovation. If styling clothes aren’t for you, start the day off by experimenting with your makeup. Try using lip color as a cheek stain, swipe on a colorful shadow or matte shadow, or sweep on an extra coat of mascara for added drama. If contouring is in your morning routine, try a natural makeup look by treating your skin to a mask and going almost bare with a tinted moisturizer.
CULTIVATING YOUR SPACE | Interior Design
Interior design is a favorite of mine. In fact, this creative pastime is what made my new house feel like a home. But, with all strengths come weaknesses. While I might be great at interior design projects – I struggle with organization, Luckily, my sister, Tessa, helped organize my entire kitchen on the promise I’d helped her design her first dorm room.
EXPLORING | Traveling Near or Far
Last but not least – the best way to tap into your creativity as an adult is by traveling!
From the itinerary to the flight home – a lot of energy goes into traveling. I encourage you to embrace the creative flow! Adventuring somewhere new can be intimidating – especially if you’re on your own alone. With my job, I often travel alone, leaving me to my thoughts and choices. I must say, I always return feeling inspired!
