New Englander’s Guide To Making A House Feel Like A Home

While Matt and I hunker down and prepare for another 30 days of social distancing, we’re trying to make the most of this time by putting a few personal touches on our house to make it feel more like our home. We’ve officially lived in our New England fixer-upper for almost a year and yet we have not one painting on a wall, at least two rooms with absolutely nothing in them and a few light fixtures yet to be hung. So to keep our bodies moving on the weekends and our minds thinking, we’re tackling a room a week and I’ve gone ahead and pulled a few pieces I admire and would one day love to add to my home.

Le Creuset Signature Braiser |

This pan has always been on my wish list and very rarely goes on sale, so I was shocked when I saw it on sale and in my favorite color artichoke. While I’m not in the position to purchase this item for myself, I do have four weddings this year and may or may not have snagged this as a bridal shower gift for one of them!

Colonial Lamp Post |

Matt and I still have a few outside projects left, like fixing our very old lamp post. We want it to match the feel and style of our colonial house which this does perfectly.

Maison Storage Bath Caddy |

I’ve always admired this bath caddy and with a lot of time being spent at home, I’ve taken more baths this last week than I have all year. Personally. I love this bath cady in antique brass but it comes in an array of finishes.

Sailboat Bookends |

I adore bookends, whether you use them on a bookshelf together or split them up and use them as plain shelving decor or doorstoppers around your home. They bring a level of coziness to your home. All and all, I find most of my antique bookends on eBay!

Wythe Windsor Bench |

One Kings Lane is one of my favorite stores to shop when it comes to furnishing the home and today they’re offering 20% off their site! This bench is a very colonial but also coastal piece that would look good in any type of New England home.

Cambridge Chair |

My dream is to update our living room by moving our sectional to the basement, adding a leather couch and two of these ultra-cozy Cambridge chairs, facing the fireplace. I could just see myself cuddling up into one of these chairs at the end of a long day, and the good news is Serena & Lily is currently offering 20% off select goods with code – ATHOME.

Manchester Demilune Console |

This piece is currently 20% off this piece is gorgeous and would look great by our front door – as a place to drop our keys or at the end of our long hallway upstairs. Pieces like this bring character into the home while being functional.

7 Decorative Vases |

When I get asked, how to add character to the home I always say vases! Decorative vases are great not only to stage the home but also to add color. My home has a lot of green and brown walls so adding white vases with colored flowers real or artificial adds a sense of charm and livelihood to a dark room.

Spring always feels like a time to clean or purge Spring always feels like a time to clean or purge what's no longer serving us. Sometimes that's simply clothes that no longer fit; other times it's figuratively speaking - like mindsets and thoughts - which is what I want to talk about today.

Recently I've been focused on 'reframing' how I see my blog and cleaning out old mindsets, thoughts, and structures.

Since starting my blog in 2014, I was diligent about posting regularly. I uploaded to the site 3 days a week, 7 days a week on Instagram, and one Youtube video a month. All while making sure to cross-pollinate my content amongst Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest.

Over the past year so much has changed. Not just for me personally - but for all of us. My work has changed. I now work full-time running @mrtrophyshop while also running my blog. Like many, as a small business owner of a heavily impacted industry (sports & banquets), I had to navigate the pandemic and pivot my blog with the pressures to perform on new platforms like TikTok, Clubhouse, and IG Reels.

All and all the mindset of 'having to post' so many times a week or 'having to create viral TikTok content' was extremely limiting both creatively and mentally.

It took me a couple of months to reflect and sit with different outcomes until I finally came to peace and was able to release what 'used to work' and instead carve out a new definition of what 'will work' for where I am today.

Reframing my relationship with my blog has been creatively freeing. So, if you're looking to reframe how you see here's a few steps to lead the way:

🌷☀️ As the days grow longer and flowers beg 🌷☀️ As the days grow longer and flowers begin to bloom, I’m taking time each day to appreciate a little extra sunshine! One of my favorite ways to do so is by meeting Mr. Matt outside for lunch during the week. A super-easy way for us to incorporate healthy high-quality protein in our diet is by adding dairy to a plant-based meal. 🐮🥛 Personally, my favorite way is with a yogurt parfait! Packed with 13 essential nutrients, including vitamin A, vitamin D, zinc, selenium and protein - yogurt is the perfect base for berries and granola. It’s the ideal combo for a real, sustainable meal. Plus, since dairy is such a portable option, it’s simple to add a protein punch to any lunch! 🧀🥛 Try adding cheese to your plant-based salad of greens, dried berries, and nuts, or add slices stacked with crackers and fresh fruit. 🐮 🥗 Dairy is not only a natural source of immune-boosting nutrients, but it’s also a local food. When you choose dairy, you are supporting farm families right here in Connecticut and throughout New England. @newenglanddairy @connecticutdairy #CTDairy #newenglanddairy #keepitrealdairy #HaveAPlantWithDairy

One thing I've been trying to prioritize lately th One thing I've been trying to prioritize lately that's helped me feel more balanced and less anxious & agitated in my day-to-day life is creating a 'cool down' routine post-work.

To help my mind and thoughts transition from work to home - while actively making space in my mind for the people and plans I have that evening - I've created this 3 STEP COOL DOWN ROUTINE:

🦆FIND A QUIET SPOT: Being busy at work is fulfilling but also overwhelming, which doesn't leave me with much time to process the day. So I'll drive to a quiet spot often near nature - either by the water or a town green and give myself a couple minutes of silence.

😌MEDIATE: Once comfy, I'll listen to the daily mediation offered on the @headspace app. I'll usually do the shortest mediation possible (just 3 minutes!) to wind down my mind.

📝JOURNAL: Finally, I'll answer 2 - 5 questions from a series of questions I have printed out to pick from.

💬"What went well today"
💬"What was hard about today"
💬"What do I have to lookfroward to about tonight"
💬"What am I being called to let go of"
💬"What am I being called to trust"
💬"What'll make tomorrow great"

Overall, the idea of a cool-down routine came about from the emotions I was feeling between running the blog and @mrtrophshop full time. I found myself carrying both the stressful and exhilarated energy of work home with me. So, when I got home I was still running on full cylinders - worried, preoccupied, and focused on work details instead of being present & joyful about my plans for the evening.
