New Englander’s Guide To Making A House Feel Like A Home

While Matt and I hunker down and prepare for another 30 days of social distancing, we’re trying to make the most of this time by putting a few personal touches on our house to make it feel more like our home. We’ve officially lived in our New England fixer-upper for almost a year and yet we have not one painting on a wall, at least two rooms with absolutely nothing in them and a few light fixtures yet to be hung. So to keep our bodies moving on the weekends and our minds thinking, we’re tackling a room a week and I’ve gone ahead and pulled a few pieces I admire and would one day love to add to my home.

Le Creuset Signature Braiser |

This pan has always been on my wish list and very rarely goes on sale, so I was shocked when I saw it on sale and in my favorite color artichoke. While I’m not in the position to purchase this item for myself, I do have four weddings this year and may or may not have snagged this as a bridal shower gift for one of them!

Colonial Lamp Post |

Matt and I still have a few outside projects left, like fixing our very old lamp post. We want it to match the feel and style of our colonial house which this does perfectly.

Maison Storage Bath Caddy |

I’ve always admired this bath caddy and with a lot of time being spent at home, I’ve taken more baths this last week than I have all year. Personally. I love this bath cady in antique brass but it comes in an array of finishes.

Sailboat Bookends |

I adore bookends, whether you use them on a bookshelf together or split them up and use them as plain shelving decor or doorstoppers around your home. They bring a level of coziness to your home. All and all, I find most of my antique bookends on eBay!

Wythe Windsor Bench |

One Kings Lane is one of my favorite stores to shop when it comes to furnishing the home and today they’re offering 20% off their site! This bench is a very colonial but also coastal piece that would look good in any type of New England home.

Cambridge Chair |

My dream is to update our living room by moving our sectional to the basement, adding a leather couch and two of these ultra-cozy Cambridge chairs, facing the fireplace. I could just see myself cuddling up into one of these chairs at the end of a long day, and the good news is Serena & Lily is currently offering 20% off select goods with code – ATHOME.

Manchester Demilune Console |

This piece is currently 20% off this piece is gorgeous and would look great by our front door – as a place to drop our keys or at the end of our long hallway upstairs. Pieces like this bring character into the home while being functional.

7 Decorative Vases |

When I get asked, how to add character to the home I always say vases! Decorative vases are great not only to stage the home but also to add color. My home has a lot of green and brown walls so adding white vases with colored flowers real or artificial adds a sense of charm and livelihood to a dark room.

If I’m being honest, I did feel less motivated a If I’m being honest, I did feel less motivated about getting back into work mode after this past year and holiday season. It’s easy to feel in a funk during this time of year, so I wanted to share a few things that help me get back into the swing of things - like enjoying a cup of @dunkin’s new Extra Charged coffee, taking a social media break, getting outside even if just for a quick walk before work. Usually my morning walks include a @dunkin’s extra charged coffee which has 20% more caffeine than regular coffee and can be served iced or hot, for chilly New England days like today. It’s been a gamechanger for me this month and I’m interested to hear if any of you have tried it yet this year. #DunkinCT (ad) #dunkin #newengland

The seasonality of New England is definitely why I love living here and capturing seasonal moments like this for you all. It’s so funny to me how one spot can look completely different to the eye come winter, spring, summer and fall.

We all know New England’s weather is certainly unpredictable but it’s they unpredictability that makes living in New England exciting🍂, sometimes stressful 🥶 and always quintessential. #newengland #winter #winterwonderland

Truthfully I thought it was going to be a extreme Truthfully I thought it was going to be a extreme snowy winter 🥶 ❄️ but so far we’ve only had one nor’easter and basically nothing else 🤷🏻‍♀️! Honestly with nothing to do and no place to be, I wouldn’t mind a couple more inches of snow to partake in some fun winter activities, my favorite being sledding 🛷❄️! What’s your favorite winter activity? #newengland #winter #jcrewalways #jcrew

Spent the first week of the new year hunkered down Spent the first week of the new year hunkered down with some new books, binge watching Bridgerton, filling in a fresh planner, time for reflection on 2020, and a social media detox.

Honestly the time away from social was much needed and made me that much more excited to get back to sharing parts of myself and my favorite parts of New England with you all 🎿❄️. So I have to ask, do you have any post requests for 2021? #newengland #newyear #scenesofnewengland

Oh, it looks like the weather outside is 100% goin Oh, it looks like the weather outside is 100% going to be frightful this Christmas Eve ☃️❄️ but that just means the fire will be that much more delightful 🔥🎄. Looking forward to a peaceful night by the fire, watching Christmas movies, drinking hot cocoa and waiting for Santa - who apparently is going to need a little help from Rudolph this year with the wild winter storm coming 🎅🏼❤️.

The last photoshoot of the year is always bittersw The last photoshoot of the year is always bittersweet for me and in the past it usually incorporates some kind of hustle and bustle of holiday travel. So it’s fitting that my last photoshoot of 2020 is a more reflective one, all shot at home. @DrinkMerchant’s, a new hard lemonade and peach tea brand, appreciates the craftsmanship and hard work it takes to create a quality product, or in my case, quality content even if it’s just from my home.
Merchant’s believes it’s important to take time to appreciate the journey and this year, more than ever, I couldn’t agree more! I spent a lot of time this year brainstorming, pivoting and adapting both my businesses and that’s worth celebrating, even if it felt like a failure at times.

Merchant’s asked me to reflect on my merchant journey. One way I do this is by adding a new ornament to my tree on Christmas Eve that signifies a big accomplishment from the year past, like a camera ornament for when I blogged full time in 2016 and this “For Sale” ornament for when Matt and I purchased and fixed up our New England fixer upper in 2018. It’s something I not only cherish in the morning but for years after.

So pick up a delicious can of @DrinkMerchant’s hard lemonade, that was carefully crafted with barrel-aged flavors and the right amount of sweetness for a smooth finish. Cheers to the journey behind every success! #MerchantsPartner (ad) #newyear #holidays
