When New England greenery takes a dive into shades of red, orange, and yellow – everyone knows fall has arrived. Add autumn hues to your outdoor aesthetic or bring pops of foliage inside with the perfect perennial: mums!

If you’re like me and decorate your home for each season, the best way to let your space speak for itself is with a pop of in-season color! My favorite way to add autumn hues to my home is with both real mums outdoors and faux mums indoors.

This time of year, farm stands are a great place to purchase mums. Farmstands offer a large variety of mums in different sizes, colors, and price ranges – making them a moderately affordable way to add a pop of color to any space.

Outdoors: How to Showcase Your Live Mums

It’s best to buy live mums in the pre-budding stage – not yet in full bloom – because they will last a bit longer. Mums thrive in full sun conditions as long as you give them plenty of water. Mums are considered tender perennials, which means they can grow and reblossom for up to four years. Mums can be grown in wooden planters, displayed on a stoop in apple baskets, or planted in the ground.

Generally, mums flower for two or three weeks. I recommend planting mums outdoors in wooden planters like here, here, and here.

Indoors: How to Showcase Your Mums

While you can use live mums indoors, I prefer faux mums that look like the real deal! My favorite place to purchase all of my indoor faux floral needs is Wild Wisteria in Durham, CT. Decorate your home by filling vases, planters, or real apple baskets with faux mums.

Bring a pop of fall color to your kitchen by placing a vase of faux mums atop your white countertops or display them in a planter on your kitchen island.

In your living space, create a display using mums around your fireplace or furniture. If you have an antique fireplace or rarely use your working fireplace, you can place mums inside atop upside-down apple boxes. Add extra flair with twinkle lights, battery operated flickering candles, and fresh pumpkins.

Bring your faux mums outdoors to decorate tablescapes or picnic areas. Just be sure to bring them back inside to lower the risk of fading.
